Dr. Quan Jason Cheng received his BS and MS degree in Chemistry from Nanjing University (1986 and 1989, respectively), and Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Florida in 1995. After a postdoctoral stint in University of California at Berkeley, he worked as a staff scientist and later became a group leader at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory from 1997 to 2001. He joined the chemistry faculty of the University of California at Riverside as an assistant professor in 2001, and was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2007, and full professor in 2010. The research interest of his lab is centered on biosensing technologies with surface plasmon resonance, microarray, electrochemistry, functional materials, and surface-enhanced mass spectrometric methods.

Dr Cheng has published over 100 papers on various subjects including molecular interactions, supramolecular assemblies, supported lipid membranes, bacterial toxins, electrospun nanofibers, SALDI-MS and cytotoxicity research. He serves as journal referee for more than 30 journals; and as ad hoc member for numerous NSF panels and NIH study sections since 2004. He also serves as an external reviewer for ACS Petroleum Research Fund, the Research Corporation, Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC), Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Fund (ITF), Singapore National Research Foundation (NRF), US National Research Council, and United States-Israel

Fluorescent, radioactive, and other labels have been long employed for detections in immunoassays and molecular binding events but have shown many limitations. There has been unprecedented growth in label free technologies over the last two decades. As one of the most advanced label free techniques, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) continues to be at the forefront of evolving sensing technology that offers unrivaled sensitivity and convenience for quantitation of molecular interactions in all forms [1]. This seminar will discuss the latest advances in SPR and the strategies employed in our lab to improve the technique from the approach of interface design and substrate manipulation. Novel SPR biochip design that enables excitation of SPPs in patterns for background-free imaging analysis will be discussed. Fabrication of calcinated nanofilms to facilitate the establishment of biomimetic lipid membrane interface that are essential to membrane-based receptor-protein studies will be presented. Applications of the calcinated nanofilms in membrane stability assessment, in situ construction of polymer coating using host-guest chemistry, and their application in surface-based matrix-free mass spectrometric methods to promote orthogonal measurement will be covered. Finally, the perspective and preliminary results of 3D printing technology in advancing high performance label-free biosensing will be discussed.
