Piet Herdewijn is Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at KU Leuven, Belgium and Director of Rega Institute for Medicinal Research, KU Leuven.

He obtained his Ph.D in KU Leuven in 1981 and carried out two years postdoctoral study at the Laboratory of Prof. W. Pfleiderer, University of Konstanz, Germany.

From 1984-1988, he worked as research fellow supporting by National Fund for Scientific Research in KU Leuven.

He was appointed as assistant professor in 1988, associate professor in 1990 and full professor in 1993 at KU Leuven.

Beside his big research group in KU Leuven, He founded the Laboratory of Medicinal Chemistry at the Ghent University, Belgium, and the “Xenome” laboratory at the University of Evry-Val-d’Essonne, France.

He has supervised more than 160 PhD students and post-docs, published more than 670 papers in the field of bioorganic, structural, and medicinal chemistry. He is the inventor of more than 40 patents, author (or coauthor) of 48 books.

He has delivered 224 lectures on invitation in the world. He organized and co-organized 36 national and international conferences and symposia.

He has received more than 20 national and international awards for his distinguished contributions to sciences.

His current interest is the application of nucleic acid chemistry in synthetic biology and the development of new antiviral and immunosuppressive agents.

Piet Herdewijn是比利时鲁汶大学药物化学教授，Rega医药研究所所长。

Herdewijn教授于1981年在鲁汶大学获得博士学位，随后在德国康斯坦茨大学Wolfgang  Pfleiderer教授实验室做了两年博士后研究。

1984 - 1988年，他担任鲁汶大学国家科学研究基金资助的研究员。1988年任助理教授，1990年任副教授，1993年开始担任鲁汶大学终身教授。

除在鲁汶大学的研究团队外，他还在比利时根特大学创建了药物化学实验室，在法国Evry-Val-d'Essonne大学创建了“Xenome”实验室。

他指导过160多名博士生和博士后。在生物有机，结构和药物化学领域发表670多篇论文。

他是40多项专利的发明者，48部专著的作者(或共同作者)。他在国际上作过224次邀请报告。主持(或共同主持) 过 36个国家和国际学术研讨会。

他因对科学的杰出贡献而获得了超过20个国家和国际奖项。

他目前的科研兴趣是核酸化学在合成生物学中的应用以及新的抗病毒和免疫抑制剂的研发。
