摘要 :
Nitrate accumulation in soils, rivers and lakes associated with human activities continues to pose serious environmental problems particularly eutrophication of lakes. Various methods are currently being considered to mitigate this serious threat to human welfare, including electrochemistry. The latter process is highly complicated as it involves the transfer of multiple electrons. The strategy followed in our laboratory foreffectively accomplishing multiple electron transfer reactions, involves the use of several electrocatalysts acting in series, as introduced by Anson et al for the reduction of O2.
Earlier experiments performed in our laboratories have shown that a Au electrode modified with underpotential-deposited metal atoms such as Cd or Cu can promote the electroreduction of nitrate More recently, significant enhancements in the electrocatalytic activity of the Cd|Au system were found upon adding Pd either as ad-atoms or as nanoclusters dispersed on the Au surface. Evidence for the reaction proceeding beyond the nitrite step was obtained from measurements involving a Au|Au rotating ring disk electrode in which the Au ring was scanned while a Pd@Au disk was polarized at E = -0.1 V to detect the nitrite formed during the reduction of nitrate on the disk. Addition of Pd led to a sizable reduction in the current associated with nitrite oxidation.
