Redox-Active Molecule-Based Frameworks for Energy Storage and Molecular Magnetism

Kunio Awaga

Solid-state electrochemistry (SSE) is a comprehensive discipline which covers various topics from fundamental sciences to practical applications. Recently, redox-active molecule-based materials has attracted much attention in the research of rechargeable batteries and molecular magnetism. In this presentation, we report our research on the high energy-density and high power-density Li batteries of various transition-metal cluster complexes (molecular clusters) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). In addition, we also report the magnetic properties of Prussian-blue analogues, magnetite, MOFs, etc. which are controlled by means of SSE.

Biography:

Kunio Awaga graduated from the Univ. of Tokyo in 1983, and went on to receive his D.Sc. there in 1988 for his experimental and theoretical studies into ferromagnetic intermolecular interactions, under the supervision of Professor Minoru Kinoshita. In 1988 he was appointed as a research associate at the Institute for Molecular Science, where he conducted studies into nitronylnitroxide radicals, which included the first organic ferromagnet p-NPNN and the organic Kagome antiferromagnet m-MPYNN, among others. In 1992 he returned to the Univ. of Tokyo as an associate professor at the Dept. of Pure and Applied Sciences, and expanded his activity toward thiazyl radicals and organic-inorganic hybrid materials. In 2001 he moved to Nagoya Univ. as a professor at the Dept. of Chemistry and, in 2007, he transferred to the Research Center for Materials Science. Since 2013, he has been the director of this center. He has also been the vice dean of School of Science. His dream is to realize a win-win situation for both molecular science and organic electronics, as the field matures from fundamental to applied research.
